John Michael Carter


Artist's Statement/Quote

"When I am painting I choose subjects that are part of my everyday experience. I enjoy painting the scenes around my house or members of my family."

John Michael Carter was born in Chicago, Illinois. He began his first studies in drawing at the age of 16 with his father E.L. Carter, a commercial artist. He received a B.F.A. degree from the Art Center College of Design with a background in the major classical schools of painting.

Carter has shown his work through numerous one-man shows across the country. He has exhibited with Grand Central Gallery in New York; the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma; the Amarillo Art Center in Amarillo, Texas; the Deville Gallery in Los Angeles, California; the J. Todd Gallery in Wellesley, Massachusetts; and the Meyer Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Carter currently paints full time in a studio near the workshop where his wife Barbara, handcrafts gilded frames for original paintings. He paints for several originals galleries, national shows, and special corporate and personal commission projects.



Awards/Special Exhibits

Carter's image of “The Yellow Canary” was awarded the Grand Prize at the 2004 Oil Painters of America Exhibit.

He also has been the recipient of many awards in international portrait competitions, including recognition by the Portrait Society of America.
